My second mosaic was much more complex than the first.
I had been wanting to make a mosaic of this style for several years,
but getting the thousands of 1x1 bricks required was a bit tricky.
Then, as luck would have it, the Lego®Official Stores
started selling 1x1 bricks in the basic colors on their Pick a Brick
wall. I bought one of their standard containers full of 1x1's, which I
later estimated to be about 900 bricks.
Now that I had a source of pieces for a reasonable price, I needed to make a final plan about what the mosaic should be. Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges-Pierre Seurat seemed to fit perfectly to this style of Lego® art. The painting itself was made from only a few basic colors, using dithering, as does my mosaic, to get many hues. I used The Gimp to create the pattern. I chose dimensions of 96 x 64 (6 standard base plates), as it made a relatively clear image, and wasn't too expensive for my first try. If you haven't already done the math, that's 6,144 1x1s. Thankfully spots could be filled with larger bricks I already had, but I would still need more bricks. Another trip to the Lego® Store later, and I was ready to build. The project took a couple of days. (midway through, I had a shortage of black and yellow) I added spanning plates between the base plates for extra support, and used 2 x 8 Technic plates for hangers.
